These crispy air fryer French toast sticks deliver a perfect crunch on the outside while keeping the inside soft and flavorful, making for an easy and nostalgic breakfast treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick-cut bread (Texas toast or brioche, day-old preferred)
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) whole milk or dairy-free alternative
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter or cooking spray (for greasing the air fryer basket)
  • Powdered sugar or maple syrup (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice thick-cut bread into sticks about 1 to 1.5 inches wide.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and fragrant.
  3. Pour custard mixture into a shallow dish. Dip each bread stick into the mixture, soaking about 20-30 seconds per side without making it soggy. Place soaked sticks on a plate.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.
  5. Lightly grease the air fryer basket with butter or cooking spray.
  6. Arrange soaked bread sticks in a single layer in the basket, avoiding overcrowding. Cook in batches if necessary.
  7. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until sticks are golden brown and crisp on the outside but soft inside.
  8. Remove from air fryer and serve warm with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Do not over-soak the bread to avoid sogginess. Preheat the air fryer for best crispness. Flip sticks halfway through cooking for even browning. Avoid overcrowding the basket. If sticks are undercooked inside, add 1-2 more minutes. Variations include gluten-free bread, dairy-free milk, and adding spices like nutmeg or orange zest.
