A simple, vibrant, and refreshing summer mocktail combining ripe strawberries, fresh basil, and tangy lemon juice, perfect for cooling down on warm days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced (about 225 g / 8 oz)
  • 1012 fresh basil leaves (preferably Genovese basil)
  • 3 large fresh lemons (for about ¾ cup / 180 ml lemon juice)
  • ½ cup simple syrup (120 ml) – homemade or store-bought
  • 4 cups cold water or sparkling water (1 liter / 34 fl oz)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional garnishes: lemon slices, extra basil sprigs, whole strawberries

Instructions

  1. Place sliced strawberries and basil leaves in a pitcher. Gently muddle about 10 times using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon to release basil oils and crush strawberries slightly. Avoid over-muddling to prevent bitterness. (2-3 minutes)
  2. Juice the lemons using a citrus juicer. Strain the juice through a fine mesh strainer if desired to remove pulp and seeds. Pour approximately ¾ cup (180 ml) lemon juice into the pitcher.
  3. Add ½ cup (120 ml) simple syrup to the pitcher. Stir gently to combine. Adjust sweetness to taste by adding more syrup if desired.
  4. Add 4 cups (1 liter) of cold water or sparkling water to the pitcher. Stir gently to mix all flavors evenly. (about 1 minute)
  5. Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the strawberry basil lemonade mocktail over the ice.
  6. Garnish with lemon slices, whole strawberries, and a sprig of fresh basil.
  7. Serve immediately for best freshness and fizz. If preparing ahead, refrigerate the base mixture (without water and ice) for up to 2 days and add water and ice just before serving.

Notes

Be gentle when muddling basil to avoid bitterness. Adjust sweetness gradually. Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor. Sparkling water should be chilled to maintain fizz. Prepare base mixture ahead but add water and ice just before serving to keep it fresh and fizzy. Frozen strawberries can be used if thawed first.
