These tender slow cooker BBQ pulled pork sliders are easy to make, perfect for parties, and deliver juicy, flavorful bites with a homemade BBQ sauce and slow-cooked pork shoulder.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 to 4 pounds pork shoulder (bone-in or boneless)
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced
  • 3 to 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • About 12 soft slider buns (potato buns recommended)
  • Optional toppings: coleslaw, pickles, sliced jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Mix paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper in a small bowl and rub the spice mix all over the pork shoulder.
  3. Place sliced onions and minced garlic in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  4. Set the seasoned pork shoulder on top of the onions and garlic.
  5. In a bowl, combine BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar. Pour evenly over the pork.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 5 to 6 hours until pork is fork-tender.
  7. Remove pork from slow cooker and shred finely using two forks or hands.
  8. Skim excess fat from slow cooker juices and pour some cooking liquid back into shredded pork for moisture.
  9. Toast slider buns lightly if desired.
  10. Assemble sliders by piling pulled pork on buns and adding optional toppings like coleslaw or pickles.
  11. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

If pork isn’t shredding easily, cook longer. Let pork rest 10 minutes after cooking to lock in juices. Toast buns to prevent sogginess. Avoid overcrowding slow cooker for even cooking. Use smoked paprika or liquid smoke for extra smoky flavor. Substitute almond flour buns for gluten-free and vegan mayo for dairy-free options.
