A spooky and delicious Halloween veggie tray featuring a creamy ranch dip with a spider web design made from cream cheese. This crowd-pleasing appetizer is quick to assemble and perfect for Halloween parties, potlucks, or spooky movie nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat works best for thickness; Greek yogurt works too)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (I recommend Hellmann’s or Duke’s for the best tang)
  • 1 packet ranch seasoning mix (about 1 ounce; I prefer Hidden Valley for consistency)
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (this is Dennis’s secret ingredient—don’t skip it)
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened (for the spider web design; use full-fat for easier piping)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (to thin the cream cheese for piping, if needed)
  • 1 large head of broccoli, cut into small florets (look for tight, dark green heads)
  • 1 large head of cauliflower, cut into small florets
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 1 orange bell pepper, sliced into strips (adds a festive fall color)
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes (keep stems on for easy grabbing)
  • 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into sticks
  • 1 cup snap peas or snow peas (trim the ends)
  • 1 cucumber, sliced into rounds or half-moons
  • Optional: black olives for ‘spider’ decoration (use whole olives with pimento removed)

Instructions

  1. Make the ranch dip (5 minutes): In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 packet ranch seasoning, and 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika. Stir until smooth and fully combined. The dip should be thick but spreadable—think the consistency of thick yogurt. Taste it. You should get a tangy, herby flavor with a subtle smoky finish. Cover and refrigerate while you prep the veggies. This allows the flavors to meld.
  2. Prepare the cream cheese for piping (3 minutes): In a small bowl, soften 1/4 cup cream cheese to room temperature. If it’s too firm, microwave for 10 seconds. Stir in 1 tablespoon of milk until the mixture is smooth and pipeable. It should be thick enough to hold its shape but soft enough to squeeze through a bag. If it’s too stiff, add another teaspoon of milk. Transfer to a piping bag or zip-top bag fitted with a small round tip. Set aside.
  3. Wash and cut the vegetables (10 minutes): Rinse all vegetables under cold water and pat dry thoroughly with a clean towel. Wet veggies make the dip watery. Cut broccoli and cauliflower into small, bite-sized florets. Slice bell peppers into thin strips about 2 inches long. Peel carrots and cut into sticks about 3 inches long. Slice cucumber into rounds or half-moons. Trim the ends of snap peas. Keep cherry tomatoes whole with stems on for easy dipping. Arrange everything on a large plate or cutt…
  4. Assemble the tray (5 minutes): Place the bowl of ranch dip in the center of your large platter. Arrange the vegetables around the bowl in a circular pattern, grouping similar colors together for visual impact. I like to start with broccoli and cauliflower on opposite sides, then fill in with peppers, carrots, cucumber, and tomatoes. Leave a little space between groups so the tray looks intentional, not crowded. The goal is a rainbow of crunchy vegetables surrounding the dip.
  5. Create the spider web design (5 minutes): Remove the dip from the refrigerator. Using your piping bag, pipe concentric circles of cream cheese on top of the ranch dip. Start from the center and work outward, leaving about 1/2 inch between each circle. Then, take a toothpick or a small knife and drag it from the center outward through the circles, creating the web effect. Wipe the toothpick clean between each drag for sharp lines. Repeat this 6-8 times around the dip, spacing the lines evenly. Th…
  6. Add the spider decoration (2 minutes): For a fun touch, place a whole black olive in the center of the web. If you want to get fancy, cut another olive into thin strips to create spider legs—arrange them around the olive body. I’ve also used small plastic spider rings from the dollar store for a non-edible but kid-friendly option. Either way, it adds that final Halloween touch.
  7. Chill and serve (optional, 15 minutes): For best results, refrigerate the assembled tray for 15 minutes before serving. This helps the dip firm up and the vegetables stay crisp. If you’re short on time, serve immediately. The dip will still be delicious, but the spider web lines will be cleaner after a brief chill.

Notes

Dry vegetables thoroughly after washing to prevent the dip from becoming watery. Soften cream cheese to room temperature for easier piping. The ranch dip tastes even better if made a day ahead. Add the spider web decoration just before serving for the best visual effect. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free sour cream, vegan mayonnaise, and dairy-free cream cheese. For a gluten-free option, double-check your ranch seasoning mix.
