This homemade version of the Starbucks brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso is quick, easy, and tastes nearly identical to the original. With just a few simple ingredients and a mason jar, you can enjoy a coffee shop-quality drink in about 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso or 1/4 cup very strong brewed coffee
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup oat milk (barista blend preferred)
  • Ice cubes (a generous handful)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (plus more for garnish)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew your espresso or strong coffee. It should be hot when you add the brown sugar.
  2. Add brown sugar and cinnamon to your shaker (mason jar or cocktail shaker). Pour the hot coffee over and stir briefly until the sugar starts to dissolve.
  3. Add ice cubes to the shaker, filling about halfway (5-6 standard cubes).
  4. Seal the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 45 seconds. This aerates the coffee and creates foam.
  5. Fill a serving glass with fresh ice.
  6. Pour the shaken espresso over the fresh ice. The foam will settle on top naturally.
  7. Slowly pour the oat milk over the back of a spoon to create a layered effect. Fill the glass nearly full, leaving about half an inch at the top.
  8. Stir gently, garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and enjoy immediately.

Notes

Use hot espresso to dissolve the brown sugar properly. Shake for a full 45 seconds for the best foam. For a less sweet drink, reduce brown sugar to 1 1/2 tablespoons. Chill the serving glass beforehand for a colder drink. This drink is best enjoyed immediately.
