  • Gouda or Edam (8 oz), cut into cubes or wedges
  • Fresh Mozzarella Balls (8 oz), also called bocconcini
  • Cheddar Cheese Block (8 oz), preferably sharp
  • Brie or Camembert (one small wheel)
  • Prosciutto (4 oz), thinly sliced
  • Salami (4 oz), sliced or in stick form
  • Pepperoni (4 oz), sliced
  • Pitted Black Olives (1 cup)
  • Pretzel Sticks (1 cup)
  • Baby Carrots (1 cup)
  • Red Bell Pepper (1), cut into strips
  • Halloween Candy (1 cup), such as candy corn, candy pumpkins, or small chocolate bars
  • Grapes (1 cup), red or green
  • Dried Cranberries or Cherries (1/2 cup)
  • Honey (for drizzling over the brie)
  • Whole-Grain Mustard or Fig Jam (for serving with the meats)
  • Fresh Rosemary sprigs (optional)
  • Edible flowers (optional), like pansies or nasturtiums

Instructions

  1. Prep the Spooky Elements (5 minutes): Make the Mozzarella Ghosts: Drain the fresh mozzarella balls. Use a small, sharp knife to cut a tiny slit in the top of each ball. Insert a small piece of black olive or a tiny dot of black sesame seed for the eyes. Make the Spider Olives: Drain the black olives. Take a pretzel stick and snap it in half (or into smaller pieces). Gently push the broken ends into the olive to create legs (4 pieces per olive, 8 legs total). Cut the Cheddar Shapes: If using a bl…
  2. Arrange the Cheeses (5 minutes): Place the largest items first. Put the brie wheel or gouda wedge in one corner of the board. Place the bowl of mozzarella ghosts in another corner. Fan out the cheddar shapes in the center or along one side. Add the cubes of gouda or edam in small clusters.
  3. Add the Meats (3 minutes): Fold or drape the prosciutto slices into loose ribbons or piles. Arrange the salami slices in a small fan or pile. Place the pepperoni slices in a separate cluster.
  4. Fill in with Fruits, Veggies, and Treats (3 minutes): Fill empty spaces with grapes, baby carrots, and dried cranberries. Place the bowl of spider olives in a prominent spot. Scatter the Halloween candy around the board.
  5. Add the Dips and Garnishes (2 minutes): Place small bowls of honey, fig jam, or whole-grain mustard in different spots. Drizzle a little honey over the brie wheel. Add fresh rosemary sprigs for a ‘spooky forest’ vibe. Add edible flowers or fresh herbs for a final touch.
  6. Final Review (2 minutes): Step back and look at the board. Fill any empty patches with extra grapes or candy corn. Add toothpicks or cocktail picks near the spider olives and meats. Set out small plates and napkins.

Notes

The mozzarella ghosts and spider olives can be made a day in advance. Store ghosts in an airtight container in the fridge and spiders on a plate covered with plastic wrap. For best flavor, take the board out of the fridge 30 minutes before serving to let cheeses come to room temperature. Don’t stress about perfect shapes—wonky ghosts add character!
