Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (3 oz) orange Jell-O
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup (4 oz) vanilla vodka
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 packet (0.25 oz) unflavored gelatin
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Make the Orange Layer: In a 2-cup liquid measuring cup, empty the entire box of orange Jell-O. Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and whisk vigorously for a full 2 minutes until the gelatin is completely dissolved.
  2. Add the Booze: Add the 1/2 cup of cold water and the 1/2 cup of vanilla vodka. Stir to combine. The mixture should be slightly warm but not hot to the touch.
  3. Fill the Cups: Arrange your 2 oz shot glasses on a small baking sheet. Pour the orange mixture evenly among the cups, filling them only about halfway. You should have enough for about 20-24 shots.
  4. First Set: Carefully place the baking sheet in the refrigerator. Let the orange layer set for at least 2 hours, or until it’s firm to the touch.
  5. Bloom the Gelatin: While the orange layer is setting, start on the cream layer. In a small bowl, sprinkle the packet of unflavored gelatin over the 1/4 cup of cold water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Make the Cream Layer: In a small saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk and the heavy cream. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is warm and steaming but not boiling. Remove from the heat.
  7. Add the Gelatin: Add the bloomed gelatin to the warm cream mixture. Whisk constantly until the gelatin is completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. Cool the Cream: Let the cream mixture cool for about 10-15 minutes. You want it to be cool to the touch but still liquid.
  9. Second Layer: Once the orange layer is firm, carefully pour the cream mixture on top, dividing it evenly among the cups. Fill them almost to the top, leaving a tiny bit of room for the lids.
  10. Final Set: Place the baking sheet back in the refrigerator. Let the shots set for at least 4 hours, but overnight is best for a perfect, clean slice.
  11. Serve: Once set, put the lids on the shot glasses and keep them refrigerated until you’re ready to serve.

Notes

For the best texture, make sure your heavy cream is cold. If you’re using a different flavor of vodka, like whipped cream vodka, you can reduce the vanilla extract slightly. For a non-alcoholic version, simply replace the vanilla vodka with cold water and a splash more vanilla extract. Don’t rush the setting time for each layer. These taste even better the next day.
