Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground turkey (lean, preferably 93% lean)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional garnish)
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Water or milk (dairy or plant-based) to thin, as needed
  • 1 head of butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce

Instructions

  1. Carefully separate the lettuce leaves, rinse under cold water, and pat dry with paper towels. Set aside on a plate lined with a clean towel to absorb any excess moisture.
  2. Cut the ripe avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a food processor or blender. Add sour cream, lime juice, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add water or milk 1 teaspoon at a time until pourable consistency is reached. Set aside or refrigerate if making ahead.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened and translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook for 6–8 minutes until no longer pink, stirring occasionally to brown evenly.
  5. Sprinkle chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper over the turkey. Stir well and cook for another 2 minutes to let the spices bloom. Adjust seasoning as needed. If meat looks dry, splash in a tablespoon of water or broth to keep it juicy.
  6. Spoon generous portions of the spiced turkey mixture onto each lettuce leaf. Drizzle with creamy avocado crema and garnish with chopped fresh cilantro.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

Use fresh garlic and onion for best flavor. Butter lettuce is preferred for soft yet sturdy leaves. The avocado crema is best made fresh but can be refrigerated with plastic wrap pressed on the surface to prevent browning. You can swap ground turkey with chicken, pork, beef, or tofu for variations. Add jalapeños or hot sauce for extra spice. Store turkey filling separately from lettuce and crema for freshness. Reheat turkey gently with a splash of water or broth to keep moist.
