A dramatic, creamy Halloween punch that shifts from black to velvety purple as you stir. This deceptively easy recipe delivers stunning visuals and rich flavor without any fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (240 ml) vodka
  • 1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder
  • OR 1015 drops black gel food coloring
  • 2 cups (480 ml) stout or dark beer (e.g., Guinness)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) blackberry juice
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream or full-fat coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) simple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Fresh blackberries or raspberries (for garnish, optional)
  • Edible glitter or luster dust in black or purple (optional)
  • Dry ice (for effect only, optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the black vodka base: In a small bowl or glass measuring cup, combine 1 cup of vodka with 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal powder. Whisk vigorously until fully dissolved. If using black gel food coloring, start with 10 drops and add more until desired darkness is reached. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the stout mixture: In a punch bowl or large pitcher, combine 2 cups of stout beer, 1 cup of blackberry juice, 1/2 cup of heavy cream (or coconut milk), 1/4 cup of simple syrup, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and uniform.
  3. Chill everything: Refrigerate the stout mixture for at least 30 minutes before serving. Also chill the black vodka separately. The colder the ingredients, the better the color separation effect.
  4. Add the black vodka: When ready to serve, slowly pour the black vodka into the center of the chilled stout mixture. Do not stir yet. The cold temperature and density difference will create a striking two-layer effect.
  5. Watch the magic happen: As guests ladle the punch into cups, the black vodka will naturally swirl into the stout mixture, creating a gorgeous purple color. For a faster effect, give one gentle stir with a spoon.
  6. Garnish and serve: Drop fresh blackberries or raspberries into the punch bowl. Sprinkle edible glitter on top if desired. For extra effect, add a small piece of dry ice using tongs (never bare hands).
  7. Serve with ice on the side: Fill a separate bowl with ice cubes and let guests add their own to prevent watering down the punch.

Notes

Don’t skip the chilling step—cold ingredients are essential for the dramatic color change. Use a clear glass punch bowl to show off the effect. Test the black vodka ahead of time to avoid a gritty texture from too much charcoal. For a non-alcoholic version, swap vodka for cold black tea or non-alcoholic spirit, and stout for non-alcoholic stout or black coffee kombucha. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days; do not freeze.
