A simple, family-friendly dessert featuring tender baked apples wrapped in flaky crescent roll dough, topped with a crackly cinnamon sugar crust and a buttery sauce. Ready in about 45 minutes, it’s perfect for weeknights or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium apples (about 600g), peeled, cored, and quartered (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1 can (8 ounces, 226g) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) water
  • Optional: vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Peel, core, and quarter the apples into even-sized wedges.
  3. In a small bowl, combine sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch; whisk until well mixed.
  4. Separate crescent roll dough into 8 triangles along perforations. Let dough rest at room temperature for 10 minutes if too cold.
  5. Place one apple wedge at the wide end of each dough triangle. Roll dough around apple, tucking in sides; place seam-side down in prepared dish.
  6. Drizzle melted butter evenly over wrapped apple wedges.
  7. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the butter-drizzled dumplings.
  8. Pour water carefully around the edges of the dish (not over the dumplings).
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until tops are golden brown and apples are tender. Sauce should be bubbly and slightly thickened.
  10. Cool in dish for 5-10 minutes. Serve warm, spooning sauce over each serving. Top with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

For best results, use firm apples like Granny Smith. Let crescent roll dough rest at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before wrapping to prevent cracking. Can be assembled up to 4 hours ahead and refrigerated; add 5 minutes to baking time if starting cold. To double the recipe, use two 9×13 pans or a larger dish; baking time remains similar. For a lower-sugar version, reduce sugar to 3/4 cup if using sweet apples like Honeycrisp.
