This no-bake dessert features creamy homemade chocolate pudding topped with crushed chocolate cookie ‘dirt’ and gummy worms. It’s a fun, nostalgic treat that comes together in just 10 minutes of active time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos), finely crushed (about 15 cookies)
  • 1 package gummy worms

Instructions

  1. Make the Chocolate Pudding: In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Slowly drizzle about 1/2 cup of the milk into the yolks while whisking constantly to temper them.
  2. Combine and Cook: Whisk the remaining milk into the dry ingredients in the saucepan. Then whisk in the tempered egg yolk mixture. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly with a whisk, scraping the bottom and corners. After about 5-7 minutes, it will thicken enough to coat the back of a spoon and hold a line when you drag your finger through it.
  3. Finish the Pudding: Remove the pan from the heat immediately. Stir in the butter pieces and vanilla extract until the butter is completely melted and the pudding is glossy.
  4. Cool the Pudding: Pour the hot pudding into a bowl. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the pudding. Let it cool on the counter for about 15 minutes, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until completely chilled and set.
  5. Make the Dirt: While the pudding chills, crush the chocolate sandwich cookies using a food processor or by placing them in a zip-top bag and crushing with a rolling pin until they resemble fine, dark soil with some texture.
  6. Assemble the Cups: Spoon a generous 2 tablespoons of crushed cookies into the bottom of each of six cups. Spoon or pipe the chilled chocolate pudding on top, filling each cup about 2/3 full.
  7. Top with Dirt and Worms: Sprinkle a thick layer of remaining crushed cookies over the pudding. Gently poke gummy worms into the ‘dirt’ so they appear to be crawling out.
  8. Chill Before Serving: Refrigerate the assembled cups for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve cold.

Notes

For best results, use whole milk and avoid skim. The pudding must be fully chilled before assembly to prevent soggy cookie crumbs. Sour gummy worms add a nice tangy contrast. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; do not freeze.
