A quick and easy frozen watermelon margarita recipe that’s perfect for summer, with a delicious virgin option included. This refreshing drink combines sweet watermelon, tangy lime, and tequila (or sparkling water) for a slushy, crowd-pleasing beverage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (about 600g) fresh watermelon, cubed and frozen (seedless preferred)
  • 1 to cups (240-360ml) ice cubes
  • ½ cup (120ml) tequila blanco (optional for virgin version)
  • ¼ cup (60ml) fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) orange liqueur like Triple Sec or Cointreau (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) simple syrup or agave nectar (adjust to taste)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Coarse salt or Tajín for rimming glasses
  • Fresh lime wedges for garnish
  • Small watermelon slices or mint leaves (optional for garnish)
  • Virgin option adjustments:
  • Replace tequila and orange liqueur with ½ cup (120ml) sparkling water or lemon-lime soda
  • Extra simple syrup up to 1 tablespoon (15ml) if sweeter virgin drink desired

Instructions

  1. Freeze the watermelon: Cut fresh watermelon into 1-inch cubes. Arrange in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight until solid.
  2. Prepare the glasses: Rub a lime wedge around the rim of each glass. Dip rims into coarse salt or Tajín and set aside.
  3. Blend the base: Add frozen watermelon cubes and about 1 cup (240ml) ice cubes to the blender.
  4. Add liquids: Pour in tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur (if using), simple syrup, and a pinch of salt. For virgin version, substitute tequila and orange liqueur with sparkling water or lemon-lime soda and add extra sweetener if desired.
  5. Blend until smooth: Pulse and blend on high for 30 to 60 seconds until thick and slushy. Stop and scrape sides if needed for even consistency.
  6. Adjust taste: Taste and add more simple syrup if too tart or a splash of water/sparkling water if too thick.
  7. Serve immediately: Pour into prepared glasses and garnish with lime wedge, watermelon slice, or mint sprig.

Notes

Freeze watermelon cubes ahead to avoid watery drinks and achieve perfect slushy texture. Use fresh lime juice for best flavor. Avoid over-blending to prevent melting ice. Salt or Tajín rim enhances flavor balance. Adjust sweetness last as watermelon sweetness varies. Virgin option replaces alcohol with sparkling water or lemon-lime soda and extra sweetener.
