This Spooky Caramel Apple Sangria is a quick and easy Halloween punch that tastes like a caramel apple in a glass. Made with white wine, apple cider, caramel vodka, and fresh apples, it’s the perfect crowd-pleasing drink for any Halloween party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc
  • 1 cup (240 ml) apple cider or unfiltered apple juice
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) caramel vodka or plain vodka (optional)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) apple brandy or Calvados
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) store-bought or homemade caramel sauce, plus more for drizzling
  • 2 medium Honeycrisp or Fuji apples, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1 large Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise (optional)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) black sanding sugar or black sprinkles (for rimming glasses)
  • Caramel candy wrappers or plastic spiders for decoration (optional)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Core the Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples, then slice them into thin rounds or half-moons about 1/4-inch (6 mm) thick. Leave the skin on.
  2. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together 1/4 cup (60 ml) of the caramel sauce with 2 tablespoons of warm water until smooth.
  3. In a large pitcher or punch bowl, pour the entire bottle of white wine, apple cider, caramel vodka (if using), apple brandy, and fresh lemon juice. Add the thinned caramel sauce and stir gently with a wooden spoon until combined.
  4. Drop in the apple slices, cinnamon sticks, and star anise (if using). Gently press the apples down so they are mostly submerged.
  5. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4-6 hours or overnight.
  6. When ready to serve, pour a thin layer of caramel sauce onto a small plate. On another plate, spread the black sanding sugar. Dip the rim of each glass first into the caramel, then into the sugar, twisting gently to coat evenly. Let them sit for a minute to set.
  7. Give the sangria a gentle stir, then pour or ladle it into the prepared glasses, making sure each glass gets a few apple slices and a cinnamon stick. Drizzle a tiny bit of extra caramel sauce over the top. Add a plastic spider or rosemary sprig for garnish.

Notes

For best flavor, make the sangria in the morning and let it chill all day. The apples will soften slightly but still hold their shape. Do not let it sit longer than 24 hours, or the apples start to break down. If you can’t find caramel vodka, use plain vodka plus an extra tablespoon of caramel sauce. For a non-alcoholic version, skip the vodka and brandy and use sparkling apple cider instead of wine.
