Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz aged gouda or sharp cheddar, sliced into wedges
  • 8 oz brie or camembert, left whole
  • 4 oz goat cheese log, rolled in black sesame seeds
  • 4 oz smoked gouda, cut into cubes
  • 6 oz salami slices, halved and rolled to look like ‘severed fingers’
  • 4 oz prosciutto, draped in wavy ribbons
  • 4 oz pepperoni sticks, cut into matchstick pieces
  • 1 cup black olives, pitted
  • 1 cup marinated artichoke hearts, drained
  • 1/2 cup dried apricots, halved
  • 1/4 cup black sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, toasted
  • 1 box black sesame crackers
  • 1 box plain water crackers
  • 1 baguette, sliced into thin rounds and toasted
  • 1 cup pretzel sticks
  • 1/2 cup fig jam or red pepper jelly
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup black olive tapenade
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs
  • Dried edible flowers
  • Whole star anise
  • Fresh figs, halved

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients (5 minutes): Take cheeses out of fridge 20 minutes before starting. Drain and blot olives and artichoke hearts. Slice baguette into thin rounds and toast lightly. Cut salami slices in half and roll each half into a tight cylinder.
  2. Place your bowls first (2 minutes): Set small bowls or ramekins on the board. Fill one with fig jam, one with black olive tapenade, one with honey, and one with toasted pumpkin seeds.
  3. Position the cheeses (3 minutes): Place brie in the center. Arrange aged gouda wedge on one side, goat cheese log on the other, and scatter smoked gouda cubes around the edges.
  4. Add the meats (3 minutes): Drape prosciutto in loose ribbons around brie. Arrange salami ‘fingers’ in a cluster near one corner. Scatter pepperoni ‘bones’ in another corner.
  5. Fill in with crackers and bread (3 minutes): Fan out black sesame crackers in a crescent shape. Arrange water crackers in a separate cluster. Stack toasted baguette slices near brie. Place pretzel sticks in a small bundle.
  6. Add the spooky elements (3 minutes): Scatter black olives around the board. Place artichoke hearts near goat cheese. Tuck dried apricots between cheeses. Add fresh fig halves in a few spots.
  7. Garnish and final touches (3 minutes): Drizzle honey over brie in a zigzag pattern. Sprinkle black sesame seeds over goat cheese log. Tuck rosemary sprigs around the board. Place star anise in a few spots. Fill any empty gaps with extra crackers or pumpkin seeds.
  8. Serve immediately or chill (1 minute): Best served at room temperature within an hour of assembling. If making ahead, cover loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 4 hours. Take out 20 minutes before serving.

Notes

Don’t overcrowd the board; leave about an inch of space between items. Use color contrast intentionally (dark olives next to white cheese). Cut cheese at different angles for visual interest. Prep everything before arranging. Don’t be afraid to rearrange. Store leftovers separately: hard cheeses keep up to 2 weeks, soft cheeses within 3 days, meats about a week, crackers at room temperature in sealed bag. Fig jam and honey will soak into crackers if left overnight. Fresh herbs will wilt, so toss and use fresh next time.
