A decadent holiday side dish featuring roasted sweet potatoes whipped with butter and warm spices, topped with a crunchy, buttery maple-pecan streusel. Perfect for Thanksgiving or any fall gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4–5 medium potatoes)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Mini marshmallows (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Scrub sweet potatoes clean and prick each several times with a fork. Place on a baking sheet and roast for 45-60 minutes until completely tender. Let cool for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Peel the roasted sweet potatoes and place the flesh in a large mixing bowl. Add softened butter, maple syrup, beaten eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mash with a potato masher or beat with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
  3. Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Smooth the top with a spatula. (Can be covered and refrigerated for up to 24 hours at this point.)
  4. In a medium bowl, combine pecan halves, flour, brown sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, and salt. Stir until well coated and crumbly. Let the topping sit for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the sweet potato base. Bake for 25-30 minutes until topping is golden brown and casserole is bubbly around the edges. If topping browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil.
  6. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm.

Notes

Roast sweet potatoes instead of boiling for deeper flavor. Let the pecan topping sit for 5-10 minutes after mixing to prevent burning. For make-ahead, assemble without baking and refrigerate up to 24 hours; add 10-15 minutes to bake time. For vegan version, use vegan butter and flax egg. For gluten-free, substitute almond flour or 1:1 gluten-free blend in topping.
