This easy pumpkin dump cake is a simple, 4-ingredient dessert with a crunchy, buttery topping and a soft, spiced pumpkin layer. Perfect for fall gatherings or a quick weeknight treat, it requires no mixer and minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15 oz) can pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 (15.25 oz) box yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of flaky sea salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree and eggs until smooth. If using cinnamon, whisk it in now.
  3. Spread the pumpkin mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the pumpkin layer. Do not stir.
  5. Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the cake mix.
  6. Pour the melted butter evenly over the entire surface, making sure to cover all the cake mix.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling. If browning too fast, tent with foil after 30 minutes.
  8. Cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. The pumpkin layer will set as it cools.

Notes

Use 100% pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling. Pour melted butter evenly to avoid dry spots. Let the cake cool for at least 20 minutes to allow the pumpkin layer to set. For best results, use real butter, not margarine. The cake can be made ahead and tastes even better the next day.
